There are a variety of air filters available.
As a physician who has
researched the various filters available, I want to share with you the best. The only filter you want is a HEPA filter. HEPA filters clean the air of 99.97% of all airborne particulates down to 0.3 microns. (This is 300 times thinner than a human hair and means that HEPA filters remove allergens, bacteria, fungi, dust, molds, and even anthrax.) HEPA filters were originally developed during WWII by researchers at the Atomic Energy Commission to remove radioactive dust from plant exhaust. HEPA stands for High Efficiency Particulate Arrestors. HEPA filters are so versatile in removing particulates that they are used in many businesses that depend on exquisitely cleaned air. They are used to clean the air in surgery rooms, “clean room” electronic fabrication, pharmaceutical processing, and even post office processing centers after the anthrax scare. If you have flown on a commercial jet you may have noticed that you are re-breathing all the passengers’ expired air. Major airlines intended to equip all jets with HEPA filters prior to 911. After the 911 disaster, the airlines were in a financial tailspin and budgetary concerns put their well-intentioned ambitions on hold. As a physician, each of my rooms is equipped with the exact HEPA filters I sell on this site. This protects my patients from inhaling bacteria and germs from sick patients who may have been in the room before them.

Other “air filters” have been sold on infomercials touting their special air cleaning abilities. Most of these are simply machines that generate static electricity. These “air filters” create ions, free radicals, and ozone. Free radicals are unstable electrical particles that cause chain reactions leading to millions of unstable molecules. Free radicals are dangerous to your health and lead to cellular damage and aging. This is why people take antioxidants—substances that kill free radicals. One popular brand of these air cleaners was offended that Consumer Reports showed these units produce dangerous ozone. The company sued Consumer Reports…..and lost. Now that same company claims to have added a special filter that eliminates ozone. Why gamble with your health?
So how to do HEPA filters work?
HEPA filters intercept particulates by drawing them into a filter made of randomly positioned fibers that create a tortuous path a particulate must try to navigate through. Since the path is so distorted, the particulate gets trapped in the filter fiber. Interestingly, the HEPA filters become more efficient at trapping smaller particulates as more and more particles stick to the filter and further make the path of travel more difficult for subsequent particles. Austin Air HEPA filters are ready to trap the particulates down to 0.3 microns from the minute you first turn them on.
HEPA filters trap all airborne allergens, bacteria, fungi, and particulates that can be inhaled. Austin Air makes the best HEPA filters as they are incredibly sturdy, durable and dependable. Before owning my first HEPA over 10 years ago, I had tried some big name brands. NOTHING compares to the quality and durability of Austin Air Filters. It is no wonder that more medical professionals and allergists recommend Austin Air filters more than any other air cleaning devices.

HEPA filters are easy to take care of. You can simply vacuum the outside of the filter to clean it. The filters are guaranteed to last 5 years. I have used these filters personally in my office and my house for many years and have yet to replace a filter.
Why you need a HEPA Filter in your home.
Your home is a collection of allergens, dust, fumes, and chemicals. It is a fact that many houses have air quality worse than the outside air. Dust mite feces are a major cause of allergies. These microscopic particulates hide in your bedding, carpeting and drapery. Allergists will educate you on the need to remove carpeting, and encase your pillows and bed in dust mite–proof covers. Carpeting is made with chemicals similar to those in paint that leach into your airspace. Walls covered with wallpaper, wood paneling or paint give off formaldehyde and various other chemicals. Your house contains cleaning chemicals, paints, solvents, aerosols, hairspray etc, that all impair the quality of your home air. Houses with fireplaces can put ash, combustion byproducts, and carcinogenic tars in the air you breathe. If you have pets, dander, hair and skin flakes add allergens to your air supply. Even the dry cleaning you bring in your house carries chemicals that dissipate back into the air. Your best move to combat these allergens, chemicals and fumes is to purchase an Austin Air Filter.
